Cowichan Conversations: At Convergence 2014: Protecting Our Sacred Waters march, Grand Chief says Harper may delay pipeline decision

The clock is ticking as British Columbians countdown the time for a decision from of PM Steve Harper, but wait there is more, or perhaps less.

Photo by Valentina Ruiz LeotaudSpeaking in front of a large crowd gathered for the Convergence 2014: Protecting Our Sacred Waters rally on Sunday afternoon, Grand Chief Stewart Philip said the federal government may delay its decision on the controversial Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline.

“We’ve heard through the grapevine that the Harper government is going to announce a delay,” said the Chief Phillip said to the hundreds of people gathered to protest the bitumen (Read more…)

Cowichan Conversations: How Obama Shocked Harper as Keystone’s Frustrator-in-Chief

Richard Hub Hughes-Political Blogger

Here is a ‘Bloomberg Business News’ snapshot of todays strained US Canada relations. Our troubles are politically driven and stalled by the ups and downs of the Keystone pipeline controversy.

US President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Harper are dissimilar in most if not all respects.

Many environmentally concerned Americans and Canadians are virtually standing shoulder to shoulder cheering the delays.

With the Keystone pipeline and the Northern Gateway (Enbridge) proposal meeting with increased opposition it is now a possibility that they may both be rejected in their entirety.

The once all powerful PM Steve Harper (Read more…)

Cowichan Conversations: Has Christy Clark Outmanouevered the BCNDP and PM Harper on Enbridge?

Richard Hughes-Political Blogger

Well it appears that Christy Clark may have pulled off a magnificent move leaving the BC NDP, PM Harper and Alberta Premier Alison Redford in the dust over the Northern Pipeline.

If it holds the BC NDP will be able to possibly claim some credit for their part in turning BC residents against the Enbridge proposal, but as the old scorekeeper would tell them, I will you credit, but no points!

The points go to Ms Clark fresh off an election victory where clear opposition to the threat of oil tankers plying our waters along the coast was a (Read more…)

Cowichan Conversations: So Now Either the NDP Wakes Up or Dries Up. Which Will It Be?

Richard Hughes-Political Blogger

Christy’ the ‘Campaigner’ Cleaned Our Clocks!

Status quo politics have little resonance with the majority and they stayed home in droves.

The disconnect on the centre-left side of the political spectrum cannot be ignored any longer.

Now the NDP must get back to where they once belonged. It is time to reinvent themselves and get back to a more engaging style of politics.

They have not offered a relevant option to the voters. There was no emotion, no hope, no vision.

Adrian Dix was honourable, cautious and chose the intellectual high road. That approach while (Read more…)

Christy Clark and the BC liberals have made a lot of bold claims about their position on pipelines proposed for British Columbia.

However, what they have neglected to tell British Columbians is that their government has (Read more…)

Cowichan Conversations: Why Is This BC Election So Low Key This Time Around?

Richard Hughes-Political Blogger

Maroc called this morning to chat about the election that is rumoured to be underway. He was amazed how few signs were out and how it seems surreal in its lack of urgency or spark!

What has changed? Well grass roots activism within the political parties is far less than it used to be. I suppose too many figured that it is a cakewalk for Adrian Dix and the NDP so hurry up and let us vote already.

Yikes! That is worrisome. The NDP will only win if the troops get out and vote. We have (Read more…)

Cowichan Conversations: Liberals and NDP Must Declare a ‘MORATORIUM’ On Fracking In BC!

Richard Hughes-Political Blogger

Much money has been made and a great deal of environmental damage has been done through the practice of ‘Fracking’ or Horizontal Hydraulic Fracturing.

Canadians have had a heads up following horror stories in the US but never mind there is money to be made. The politicians of all stripes are as weak as water when it comes to regulating, reporting and permitting of these fracking operations.

BC and Alberta’s energy resources used to make the provinces hum, but today the difficulties are becoming harder to sweep under the carpet.

Check out this report from Fracking Canada and then question

Cowichan Conversations: Unist’ot’en Action Camp: Stopping Pipelines In Their Tracks

Richard Hughes-Political Blogger

It struck me from the outset that the Natives were Canada’s best chance for pushback against corporate and oil and gas interests. Who else could or would stop the Enbridge Pipeline, the Keystone, the Pacific Trails Pipeline, the fracking?

The NDP today is a mere shadow of the past progressive force that it was for decades but today they essentially have turned their back on those left of centre voters.

Yes, they stand against Enbridge Pipeline but are in agreement with similar forces when it comes to fracking and they are awkwardly straddling the fence when looking

Cowichan Conversations: BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix Speaks Truth To Vancouver Board of Trade

Richard ‘Hub’ Hughes-Political Blogger

BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix is offering BC Voters, including the business community, a thoughtful and measured approach to governing after years of a troubled and polarized BC under the control of the BC Liberal government.

Give him credit for showing up and speaking truth to those who have been told to be afraid of him and the NDP policies he espouses.

One of these days the MSM will actually report the truth about the economic performance of the BC NDP when last in office rather than glibly re-tell the established misinformation campaign line of NDP mismanagement that has been contradicted

Cowichan Conversations: Laila Nearly Tripped Over The Elephant!

Laila Yuile-No Strings Attached

Laila Yuile has drawn the conclusion that as things evolve Opposition Leader Dix may well be the next Premier and if he is and then if he kicks a separate BC Assessment into play there could be trouble.

Cowichan Conversations: Is Alberta’s Dirty Dilbit Actually Black’s Gold Or Is It Just Fools Gold?

Cowichan Conversations contributor Kevin Logan wrote this piece to put Newspaper Mogul David Black’s bid to promote a bitumen refinery into perspective.

Kevin Logan’s career has been diverse, ranging from small business to NGOs through finance and government.

“I have a plan!.”

David Black, an international Newspaper Magnate and BC Liberal insider, rolled out his 13 billion dollar pipe dream today claiming to be a “quiet environmentalist” who incidentally buys his ink by the barrel and owns a 150 newspapers. If that nugget was not outrageous enough he carries on to explain how his coastal refinery will overcome climate
