cartoon life: Calico flump

Upcoming, a series of cross-application experiments. Drawings began in one app, unfinished for various reasons and left to linger in the photo app. Mostly begun in Paper, or Sketches, and finished in Procreate.

Art Threat: Hugs With Arms will put affordable art on your walls

After seven years of putting political art on your computer screen, I’m now hoping to put some art on your walls.

We started Art Threat in 2007 because we felt that artists creating socially-engaged work weren’t getting the attention they deserved. After 1200+ posts over the years (and many more to come), I’d like to think we’ve managed in some small measure to introduce these artists to new audiences and help further the appreciation and understanding of political art.

About a year ago, however, I began to think about how I could do more. As someone who is an arts (Read more…)

cartoon life: Cat drawings up at Pinterest

Just put up a number of cat drawings at Pinterest.

Finally coming down to the last days of this head cold. It’s been a battle between me and the cats for nap space on the couch. In these last few days, I’m happy to secede the battle.

Things Are Good: Watch Sustainability Illustrated

Alex Magnin is an illustrator who likes making the world a better place and over the last six months he’s been illustrating sustainability. The video above is about explaining sustainability with science and is a good example of what the sort of videos he illustrates. The videos are 4-7 minuets in length and make for a good quick and informative break.

I have been working as a sustainability advisor for almost 10 years (with the international non-profit The Natural Step) and have seen first-hand the power of innovative sustainability practices to transform lives, businesses, and communities for the better. (Read more…)

cartoon life: Where can I find your free ebooks and stuff? Hmmm?

I can haz free cat books?

I’m switching out stuff from Dropbox to Google Drive. The eight wallpapers I posted earlier have a new home, and all the free ebooks, cats and landscapes are also there.

The 100 cats (nearly 150 cats only $0.99!) ebook is still at iTunes, along with the also free ebook, 20 Monsters.

cartoon life: Cat face. Are you looking at me again?

Oh, are you looking at me again?

As spontaneous as this drawing seems, it took four days. I have wanted to draw the cats more from life, but they generally are always sleeping. This one will look at me from time to time. Then run away. Or fall asleep curled up hiding her face. Or run away.

Sketchology, Popsicolor, Procreate.

Sketchology is a newish drawing program which uses vectors, so the drawing is infinitely scalable. Needs a few tools just yet, I’d like the marker to work in multiply mode, or have a layer or two to put it behind the lines. Textured vector lines are cool, something that Adobe Ideas should have. For instance the line drawing could have been done even in Sketchtime, with quick marker tones in Sketchtime, set to multiply, or on a layer behind. Sketchology has a watercolour brush and a calligraphy pen, thin and fat like the one in Paper.

Art Threat: The Zombie Index explores the space between individuals and the collective

Artist George Pfau believes zombies are an irresistible cultural force. But while most of us limit our interest to binging on Walking Dead episodes, or perhaps taking part in a Zombie Walk, for Pfau the study of zombies makes up a huge part of his art practice.

His most recent project is the Zombie Index, a website that explores the ever-expanding breadth of possibilities of what a zombie can be.

“Zombies inspire me because they provide a fascinating middle zone between alive and dead, individual and collective, inside and outside,” Pfau explained.

This particular nature of zombies is (Read more…)
