OTTAWA – Information-sharing measures in proposed anti-terrorism legislation are so broadly worded they would allow the government to spy on its political foes, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says.
Mulcair took exception Tuesday to the bill’s mention of interference with infrastructure or economic stability as activity that undermines the security of Canada.
The wording is sufficiently vague to permit a Canadian Security Intelligence Service investigation of anyone who challenges the Conservatives’ social, economic or environmental policies, the (Read more…)
I am a life long New Democrat and I am appalled at the ‘weak as water’ positioning that the Thomas Mulcair led NDP have offered in regard to the Harper anti terror Bill C 51, a bill that will, if passed, turn Canada into a CSIS Police State.
Mulcair has said he opposes Bill C 51, but so far lacks the passion and commitment necessary to have his concerns registered as significant.
Justin Trudeau just choked and offered his support right from the beginning.
If Mulcair and Trudeau not going to go to (Read more…)

Canada’s response in Iraq will be ‘noble,’ Harper says. What should that mean? By Crawford Kilian
Yesterday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper warned of a “terrorist caliphate” threatening Iraqi minorities with genocide, and said that a Canadian response to this threat would be “noble.”
The nature of our noble response is still uncertain, but it seems clear that we’re going into yet another round of wars justified by our adversaries being terrorists. It’s all getting a bit tired.
Terrorism has been around since the (Read more…)
Does the government’s enemies list now include judges?
Faced with insinuations of improper conduct from the Prime Minister’s Office and reported widely in the press, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court sets the record straight in the press release below:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In response to recent media reports, the office of the Chief Justice of Canada, the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C. is releasing the following statement.
At no time was there any communication between Chief Justice McLachlin and the government regarding any case before the courts. The facts are as follows:

Hardly a day goes by without hearing of another environmental disaster. In most cases they are easily traceable back to the doorsteps of greedy ‘Oil and Gas Corporations’ combined with reduced or eliminated federal and provincial regulations.
Do we hear outrage and a call to action from our Prime Minister over the accelerating desecration of our land? No!
Are there any governmental actions over the extreme hardships caused our residents, fish and wildlife? No!
Are there any significant responses or expressions at all from our elected MP’s and MLA’s in response to the jack boot tactics towards (Read more…)
It seems that PM Stephen Harper is visiting BC this week and will grace our Island tomorrow January 7th.
A protest has been planned by ‘Cowichan Carbon Busters’ and all concerned residents are encouraged to send him a message, with the greatest of respect of course.
Should be a good turn out and it will be good to see the many progressive concerned citizens who will be there at Brentwood College Main Entrance Gates to welcome our Prime Minister.
Cowichan Carbon Busters Citizen Rally on Jan 7
PM Stephen Harper set out to change Canada so that it would not be recognizable. He has succeeded in spades and at the same time as he is being damned , by association so are we all.
He has diminished our sense of pride and replaced it with shame.
All Canadians must recoil in spite of their particular partisan beliefs at the damage that has been done allowing the unprecedented rape of our environment, regulatory protections, civil decency and honour as a country and as citizens of Canada.
This post appeared on Common Ground and in it Noam Chomsky delivers a well (Read more…)
US, Canada and a number of other western governments throughout the western world have been fidgety and downright freaked about insider government snoops Julian Assange, Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning going rogue and telling us the truth about their former invasive, illegal and immoral activities, all of course conducted and directed by the US government on the taxpayers dime.
They have let loose with activities and surveillance schemes that our governments have been engaged in spying on our allies, and even on our own citizens.
Steve Harper has a great deal more than the Senate (Read more…)
The Senate furor continues and if anything seems to be gaining momentum in our nations capitol.
Harper has been lying through his teeth for years and although he has excelled at it for years it appears he may have spent his currency
Not so much now as the fabric of unquestioned obedience has been torn and his influence is weakening.
Canadians across the political spectrum are not buying his line this time and it is only going to get worse.
Will Harper be able to ride (Read more…)
The days of easy-going top down manipulation and disregard for almost everyone could be drawing to an end for PM Steve Harper.
In todays National Post Dean Del Mastro MP is a featured cheater of the week.
Oh, yes it is a beautiful day but when are we going to see the back of Steve?
He is not having fun anymore. People talk back, question his integrity and refuse to roll over for his pipelines are good for you mantra.
The Keystone Pipeline is looking dimmer (Read more…)
The pollution in Northern Alberta attributable to ‘Fracking’ and Tar Sands’ Operations is out of control.
The latest seemingly unstoppable spill of significance is devastating wildlife and the environment. They cannot stop it.
Nothing is being done and it seems obvious that the politicians first concern is to serve the industry, while lying their asses off to cover or minimize the damage to the local inhabitants, wildlife, farmland, rivers, lakes and streams.
Oil spills at a tar sands operation are situated on the traditional territory of the Beaver Lake Cree First Nation. The spill has been going (Read more…)
Our PM Stephen Harper is a power at any cost politician it seems.
Liberal leader Justin Trudeau is climbing in the polls giving the appearance that he will become the next Prime Minister. That is enough to have the PMO staff doing Harper’s dirty work.
Here is a Huffington Post report by Althia Raj-(Video)
The wonder of our botched up democracy is that the from time to time the criminals at the top get their comeuppances.
Is it Harper’s time to pay the price for his dishonest voter manipulation and interference, robocalls, selling out to China, so called free trade deals that disadvantage Canadians and just downright incompetence?
Could be folks, could be.
Hardly a day goes by without some new revelation, whether it is the Senate, entitlement crazed Cabinet Members or ideologically driven stupidity.
Can Steve shake loose and survive as so many other political crooks have? Look out Steve, whatever you do (Read more…)
Well we have at least four Harper appointed Senators caught up in fudging or just outright lying and cheating over expenses, residences and such.
Top that up with 3 Billion and change that has vanished from security and terrorism accounts.
Next up, Steve’s Chief of Staff cutting disgraced Senator Mike Duffy a cheque for 90 Grand to sort out his shortages and then and then…Canada’s former top security boss CSIS chief Dr. Anthony Porter being arrested for fraud in Panama.
My earlier ‘Thugs in Suits’ post seems to have been an apt description and it is getting worse. (Read more…)
The state our Canada’s democracy is grim at all levels. Our PM Steve Harper is an overbearing, top down dictator.
He has managed to BS too many Canadians that he is a wonderful manager of the economy. He is not.
Under Harper our sovereignty is being sold down the river to the Chinese and whoever else can prop up his now failing government. The trade deals passed and others still on the table are of benefit to corporate investors and the detriment of the rest of us.

Chatter in political circles of the centre and centre left variety have been underway for years. It seems that today’s NDP are more comfortable propelling and then propping up Harper than actually cutting a deal with the Liberals. Power players in the NDP inner circles have moved the party to the middle with a goal of eclipsing the Liberals, thus becoming the party of the middle.
Well they have moved to the mushy middle and yet that has not happened, has it. Truth is that the NDP are as close as they will ever get under the present electoral structures.

Holidays are over and Rafe is back telling it like it is. His response to the heavy handed Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s handling of the ‘Idle No More’ protests are predictable and welcomed.
You can just imagine how much Harper enjoys his posts and the Common Sense Canadian Blog that he runs with Damien Gillis.
So I have happily grabbed his latest and I am sure that you will enjoy it as much as I have. Here is Rafe and his views on the uprising of the Idle No More forces.
Years ago I read a saying that pretty well sums up the current situation with Steve Harper and his snarly band of rabid right wingers.
“There is a difference between the right to do something and the right thing to do.”
It is true that Harper’s ‘might is right ’ approach may at least temporarily carry the day, pass motions in the parliament, and rewrite laws, policies and regulations neglecting the tried and true practice of disclosure, debate and discussion.
Framing this undemocratic behaviour as efficient and streamlining is a dangerous lie that will come back

Support for Attawapiskat Chief Teresa Spence is it sees going international as the word of her hunger strike for aboriginal justice continues.
