The Ranting Canadian: Due to the poor attendance at Rob Ford’s campaign kickoff…

Due to the poor attendance at Rob Ford’s campaign kickoff party, his new theme song could be “Half Empty Halls” by The Evaporators.

By most accounts, the April 17, 2014 event was a flop, with low turnout, no “history in the making” moments (another Ford promise broken), none of the celebrity appearances that were anticipated, and a lackluster speech full of lies, clichés and vague pledges. According to some, Ford was even heckled a bunch of times.

TV footage showed a lot of people waiting in line to get Ford T-shirts and bobblehead dolls, but it seems that (Read more…)

The Ranting Canadian: "I can’t even get my friends to like me." Mark this date:…

“I can’t even get my friends to like me.”

Mark this date: April 16, 2014. Disgraced Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper tells the truth for the first time in his political career, as he campaigns at the state funeral of former finance minister Jim Flaherty. The rest of Harper’s speech was full of lies and propaganda, as usual.

Harper should be more like Flaherty (in his current state).

This song is “Crad Kilodney Was Innocent” by the Toronto punk band Armed and Hammered, in response to the news that cult author Crad Kilodney has died. He was a unique and eccentric fixture on downtown Toronto streets for many years, selling off-the-wall self-published books on his own. His titles included Pork College, I Chewed Mrs. Ewing’s Raw Guts, Blood Sucking Monkeys from North Tonawanda, and Putrid Scum.

At some point, I acquired a signed copy of one of his little books of short stories, Sex Slaves of the Astro-Mutants, but I must confess I have never (Read more…)

Canadians will forever be indebted because of Jim Flaherty.

Regardless of what one thinks of the recently deceased man on a personal level, if one uses objective, non-emotional criteria, it is clear that he was probably the worst finance minister in Canadian history. Unfortunately for us, his replacement, Joe Oliver, will likely be much worse.

Almost immediately after Flaherty’s death became public, the fawning political praise and sickening historical revisionism flooded in like oil from an Enbridge pipeline spill. Over-the-top accolades for the small callous man have been stomach-churning, and is an insult to his many victims. It is (Read more…)

The Ranting Canadian: March 12, 2014 was the day that the Canadian government…

March 12, 2014 was the day that the Canadian government officially ended its 12-year occupation of Afghanistan. What a pointless waste of lives, money and resources for a so-called “mission” that was never clearly defined and kept changing whenever the previous excuses stopped fooling the public.

Hopefully the Canadian military does actually get out of that country instead of doing what the Americans usually do when they invade countries across the globe: set up permanent bases and never leave.

Based on the evidence, the Jean Chretien Liberals committed our troops to this directionless, bloody escapade as a way to appease (Read more…)

The Ranting Canadian:             The unholy trinity of the Alberta tarsands industry,…

The unholy trinity of the Alberta tarsands industry, the Conservative Party and the right-wing media has gone all-out in its attacks on Neil Young for his stance against their destructive policies and actions. One thing that these corporate wolves and subservient sheep overlook is that, of course, Neil Young is right.

The main arguments by the Conservative tarsands mob are that:

1) Young hasn’t lived in Canada for a long time, so he has no right to talk about anything that happens in Canada.

2) He’s a rich rock star, so he has no right to talk (Read more…)

Crappy New Year 2014: Canada’s economy in the shitter

Yes, it’s the economy, stupid! As of January 2014, the Canadian economy continues to be shite, swirling down the toilet. The Harper Conservatives are flushing our country down the drain.

When I say “the economy”, I mean the real, boots-on-the-street, money-in-your-pocket economy, job market and standard of living, not the abstract, pie-in-the-sky “economy” that’s measured in charts and graphs that reduce the concept of economic health to little more than GDP and corporate profits.

It’s infuriating that so many in the media – even those who are usually critical of the (Read more…)

Just when you thought the lying scumbag Rob Ford couldn’t sink any lower, he belly flops into the filthy, shitty muck yet again. During a softball interview by Conrad Black on the show Zoomer TV — which aired on December 9, 2013 on the religious channel, Vision — the lying, corrupt mayor spouted disgusting, defamatory lies about Daniel Dale, a Toronto Star reporter.

Shithead Ford also falsely accused Toronto’s police chief of ordering his officers to unfairly target Ford and Ford’s criminal associates due to politics, when the reality is that police have been giving the Ford family a (Read more…)

News roundup: November 30, 2013

Here are a few thoughts about recent Canadian political stories (in no particular order).

Liberal spin on the Toronto Centre by-election

Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals have been falsely claiming they ran a wholly positive campaign in the Toronto Centre by-election, and that this is why they beat the “angry” and “negative” New Democratic Party (NDP).

First, the Liberals did go negative during that campaign, including distributing a flyer that was a personal attack against NDP leader Tom Mulcair. When called on it, the dishonest Liberals cynically claimed that the personal attack was not (Read more…)

The Ranting Canadian: It’s not really about the crack, or at least it’s…

It’s not really about the crack, or at least it’s not all about the crack. The crack-centred Rob Ford jokes, skits, songs and Internet memes certainly have been entertaining, but Ford’s recent crack use is but one of the many reasons he is hopelessly unqualified to be mayor of the largest city in Canada.

It’s about the lying, the cover-ups, the hypocrisy, the unpunished crimes, the nepotism, the football charity bribe scheme, the blatant disregard for the rules, the pilfering of expensive government resources for personal benefit, the bigotry and discrimination, the bullying, the back-room deals, the promise-breaking, the unexplained (Read more…)

The Ranting Canadian: I’m sick of reading and hearing people say things like…

I’m sick of reading and hearing people say things like “It’s not fair to suspend those senators without pay, without conducting a full investigation and giving them their day it court.”

The dishonourable Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau have already been proven guilty of embezzling from the Canadian taxpayers and of abusing the public trust. They have already been proven to not live in the houses they claimed as primary residences. In the cases of Duffy and Wallin, they have already been proven to not even live in the provinces that Harper appointed them to represent.

Whenever a new study or article comes out proving that the Canadian job market, compensation packages and standard of living are dwindling for most workers — especially young Canadians — the knee-jerk response from right-wing reactionaries is to sputter: ” Move to Alberta!” or “Go into the trades!” or “Go into the trades in Alberta!”

First, this is not a national economic plan. They are simplistic sermons by simple-minded blowhards who won’t let their ignorance hold them back from scolding others.

Second, many Canadians from across Canada have already taken those paths or are in the (Read more…)

The Ranting Canadian: The un-Canadian Harper Conservatives recently announced they are…

The un-Canadian Harper Conservatives recently announced they are giving away $1.5 million of our tax dollars to fund a politically motivated monument with the misleading name Memorial to Victims of Communism—Canada, a Land of Refuge.

It’s not “victims of Stalinism”, “victims of totalitarianism”, “victims of dictatorships”, “victims of the Soviet Union” or something along those lines – it’s victims of communism, an economic system, a political philosophy. This monument is not really about freedom or justice; it is a tribute to capitalism and right-wing ideologies. The pet project is spearheaded by a shadowy fringe group called Tribute to (Read more…)

Here is a blast from the past. A drunken, bloated Conservative senator Mike Duffy acts like a pompous, over-stuffed bag of Conservative shit, trying to defend Conservative overspending of our tax dollars by himself and 26 other recently appointed Conservative senators. NDP MP Peter Stoffer rightfully tears a strip off that Conservative porker. This was in early November 2009!

This exchange was brought on by the release of a study showing that the herd of Conservative senators appointed by Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper in 2008 and 2009 could end up costing Canadian taxpayers $177 million. Knowing what we know (Read more…)

This clip from the movie Tommy Boy is almost a re-enactment of a typical scene from Rob Ford’s life. Here are a couple more Ford-like clips from Tommy Boy: clip1 and clip 2, and here are six ways the fictional character Tommy Callahan (played by Chris Farley) differs from the real-life disgraced mayor of Toronto.

1) Tommy graduated from college, after seven years and with barely passing grades, but graduated nonetheless.

Robby flunked out of the political science program at Carleton University and later gave a BS excuse that he did so to help his druggie (Read more…)

Hooray! Sun News Network (SNN), aka Scum “News” lost their hypocritical bid to force all Canadian cable TV viewers to pay for their shitty channel regardless of whether we want to watch it.

The Ranting Canadian: The Conservative-appointed lickspittles who currently control…

The Conservative-appointed lickspittles who currently control Canada’s public broadcaster, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), have refused to air a commercial by Friends of the CBC that criticizes Stephen Harper’s government for directly meddling in the supposed arms-length media organization.

The overpaid, ass-kissing CBC executives don’t have a problem, however, with constantly airing the thinly veiled pro-Conservative commercials for the nonexistent “Economic Action Plan”.

It is disgusting how Harper has been transforming the non-partisan, tax-funded corporation into his personal propaganda machine (as if Sun News wasn’t enough). It is disappointing how willing the brown-nosers at the CBC are to shed their journalistic (Read more…)

Canada is an un-developing country.

It has been for decades. Here are some of the signs.

* Crumbling infrastructure.

* Irresponsible deregulation of industry and cutbacks to enforcement of the few, weak regulations that remain. This resulted – and will continue to result – in otherwise-preventable deaths, injuries and illnesses; worse working conditions; lower wages; and lowly consumers being ripped off.

* Electoral fraud, bribes and other types of corruption being grudgingly accepted as “business as usual”.

* Bizarre, expensive and unnecessary transformation of Canada back into a colony that is subservient to foreign interests, specifically (Read more…)

These photos are just begging to have captions or speech bubbles added.

What a bunch of crooks and parasites these Conservatives are — all brought to power by cheating, lying and taking advantage of an antiquated, semi-democratic, rigged system.

This morning I saw a few minutes of a CBC Newsworld political panel and again concluded that Canada must abolish its senate immediately. Abolish it now! There is no time for messing about.

The dishonourable, fraud-committing senate serves no legitimate purpose in this day and age, and it’s debatable whether it ever did. The unelected, patronage-appointed, archaic institution is an insult to democracy; costs us an obscene amount of tax money; and provides a bad example to young Canadians that crime does pay. It is nothing but a den of Liberal and Conservative crooks and liars living high on the (Read more…)

Here’s my final photo from the International Workers Day rally in downtown Toronto on May 1, 2013. I couldn’t resist snapping a pic of this “Bourgeois” tour bus parked near the starting point of the Mayday march. Obviously I wasn’t the only one who saw the dry humour in this, because someone else posted a photo of that bus here: http://toronto.mediacoop.ca/story/mayday-toronto-2013/17365

Toronto Mayday 2013 – Photo set 3

These are various photos of the International Workers Day march in downtown Toronto during the evening of May 1, 2013. A wide range of groups, individuals, causes and ideologies were represented — under the common banner of working class power.

Toronto Mayday 2013 – Photo set 2

Two current issues that were emphasized at the 2013 International Workers Day rally in Toronto were the deaths of hundreds of garment workers in a recent factory collapse in Bangladesh (and the continuing systematic exploitation of all sweatshop workers in that country) and the Porter Airlines fueller strike, which has been going on since January 10.

One company that has a contract with the Bangladeshi factory that collapsed is Joe Fresh, which is owned by Loblaw, which is owned by the Weston family, which is one of the richest families in the world. (Read more…)

Toronto Mayday 2013 – Photo set 1

These pictures are from the starting point of the International Workers Day rally in downtown Toronto in the early evening of May 1, 2013. The trees and sunlight in these five photos highlight the other, much older, aspect of Mayday: nature, rebirth and the arrival of spring. It was a great night with warm weather and no trouble (as far as I know). Fortunately the police behaved themselves, unlike in Montreal and some other cities.
