Peter Worthington sniffs in disdain at Wikileaks and the information they've revealed:WikiLeaks also “reveals” (my quotations are meant to imply irony) that Taliban have infiltrated Pakistan’s Intelligence Service and have alarming support in that country. So what else is new? That’s been written about and commented on so often you’d think it hardly worth mentioning. Sure, it’s important, and unless the Pakistan government regains full control of its country, the war against the Taliban cannot be won. And the Taliban protect al-Qaida.So what damage has been done by WikiLeaks exposes? The real danger lies in individuals who squeal and steal stuff in order to leak it. They are a menace who violate their oaths and/or betray trust while often posing as people motivated by a concern for truth and principles — all of which camouflages their treachery. So Peter Worthington is a 'journalist' (my quotations are meant to imply utter contempt) who thinks the real threat isn't a decade'...

I think we can all agree that a man who impersonates his identical twin to have sex with that twin's friend or partner is a species of rapist. The issue of consent is very clear--none is given. But a recent case in Israel raises some fundamental questions about the nature of consent. In this instance, a Muslim who adopted a Jewish name had sexual relations with a Jewish woman. He's now doing 18 months in jail. The man, an Arab Israeli by the name of Sabbar Kashur, told a woman he met at a bar that his name was "Dudu," a diminutive of Daniel. That was all the silver-tongued devil had to do, apparently: the two of them immediately went to a nearby office building and had a quickie. When she found out he wasn't Jewish, though, she had him successfully prosecuted for rape. The Ottawa Citizen's Janice Kennedy peels away some of the layers of this onion today. This case has become a raging controversy in Israel. Journalist Gideon Levy writes in Ha'aretz:Don't [the judges] realize that their ver...

If the Russians really wanted to probe Canadian airspace, as DefMin Peter MacKay likes to pretend, about the worst way to go about it would be to send over a Tupolev TU-95 Bear bomber and at high altitude no less. The problem with probing anything with the Bear is the Bear itself.   In service since 1955 it's old.  It's old and huge.   It has four enormous engines turning enormous, counter-rotating propellers.   That's a total of 32-enormous steel propeller blades spinning about giving this beast the radar cross section of a battleship.   When the Russkies designed the Bear, stealth was not a consideration. In effect, the Bear announces its presence well before it gets anywhere near Canadian airspace.   The Russians put in an appearance, check how long it takes for a Canadian fighter to intercept, and then head home.   No matter how much Peter MacKay wants to hype the event, the Russkies are hardly probing our defences.&nbs...

Prime Minister Stephen Harper? The next Prime Minister Michael Ignatieff?According the the Leger Marketing Poll that the Ottawa Sun et. al. ran yesterday, most of us love neither. With the exception of confidence and determination, categories where Mr. Harper scored in the mid fifties, neither of the leaders scored above forty five percent. Categories were things like In Tune With Canadians [Mr. Ignatieff 12 per cent; the PM 28]; Hypocritical [Mr. I 39; Mr. H 42] and; Condescending [Mike 41; Stephen 40].Salad days for leadership these are not.WFDS

CNN : WikiLeaks founder may have 'blood' on his handsReuters : WikiLeaks may have blood on its hands, U.S. saysBoth sources quote Admiral Mike Mullen :"Mr. Assange can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing," Mullen said. Add economists to the loooong list of professional organizations who oppose Harper's decision to axe the census long-form questionnaire. The Canadian Association for Business Economics poll found that 76 per cent of 252 respondents surveyed last week say they do not believe it is good policy to replace the mandatory long-form census with a voluntary national household survey. The survey comes as a growing number of groups are speaking out against the proposed change, saying it will degrade the quality of information on everything from city planning to school sizes and immigrant income levels. [...] “There is no substitute for the census. It is the foundation of our household information set,” said Paul Jacobson, vice-president of the economics association. The switch means “we’re spending more money for less quality – that’s the part a lot of us find offensive.” [...] Economists use census results to track changes in Canadian life, right down to the neighbour...

In case there was any doubt, Simon Enoch explains why the Fraser Institute has been so eager to trash the long-form census:One might wonder how the Fraser Institute can possible defend the evisceration of social statistics that it also depends upon for its research. That is until you realize that the Fraser Institute has been painfully allergic to evidence-based research since its inception. What does accurate data matter when you can simply manipulate it to suit your desired ends? Whether it's flawed content analysis, grossly inflated tax numbers, disregard for socio-economic indicators, misrepresenting the HST, rigged hospital and school "report cards," or bogus "Tax Freedom" days, the Fraser has always been "fact-averse." The Fraser institute has never cared about the validity of social statistics before, so why should it start now? With a voluntary long-form almost guaranteed to bias in favour of the affluent, the Fraser can end evidence of poverty, discrimination, and all the other ...

Today, Kory's Kapers, formally know as the Toronto Sun newspaper, has a picture of a jet and a headline, Ruskies Sent Packing and then an article asking Are we prepared to defend the north? This piece of political propaganda is nothing more than an imaginary argument to justify the $9 billion, F-35 purchase and ramp up the so called Tim Hortons crowd who believe the crap that governments and in particular this government puts out. Regardless of whether Russia plants a flag at the bottom of the arctic ocean or DenMark opens a weather station in the arctic or Harper moves the elite forces of the Van Doos north to surround Santa's village, the decision on which country owns which part of the arctic and more importantly the possibly resource rich Lomonosov ridge will be decided by the proposals put forth to the UN by each country making a claim. Of course none of that is explained in Kory's Kapers.  The good thing about blogging is that you end up reading a lot of articles and so...

Phyllis Schlafly: still shrieeeky and strident after all these years. "Unmarried women, 70 percent of unmarried women, voted for Obama, and this is because when you kick your husband out, you've got to have big brother government to be your provider." On Thursday, in an interview with Talking Points Memo, Schlafly repeated her link of single women, Obama and welfare, and added. "Yes, I said that. It's true too. All welfare goes to unmarried moms. They are trying to line up their constituency for Obama and Democrats against Republican candidates."And by the way, what exactly is that baked-solid entity stuck on Schlafly's head? I've cleaned up dog poop on the sidewalk that was more attractive than that.If you enjoyed this post, our blog archives have many more.

For 107 countries, the use, production and stockpiling of cluster bombs is officially banned beginning Sunday, August 1st.  From AlterNet:Dropped from aircraft or fired from artillery or rockets, the weapons scatter bomblets over a wide area, but have limited military impact today as they were designed to attack tanks on an open battlefield, an increasingly rare scenario, they said. Cluster bombs often fail to detonate immediately and can explode years after a conflict, killing or maiming civilians in Laos, Kosovo and Lebanon, according to humanitarian groups. "These weapons are a relic of the Cold War. They are a legacy that has to be eliminated because they increasingly won't work," Peter Herby, an arms expert at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), told a news conference. Support is growing for the Convention on Cluster Bombs, adopted in May 2008 and ratified by 37 states including Britain, France, Germany and Japan, which all have significant stocks. But the Un...
